Remote Working
If you have remote offices – or if your staff work from home or client sites – or if you have mobile workers in the field, there can be huge business benefits if they can access your central network remotely – just as if they were actually in the office.
Today all of this is possible and totally affordable. Here is how it works. Your employee’s computer is provided with access to the internet – ideally via broadband or in the case of mobile workers via GPRS, the new high speed mobile phone technology.
Your central server and your employee’s remote computer are equipped with software that enables them to communicate directly and securely via the internet.
This secure “tunnel” through the internet is called a Virtual Private Network or a ‘VPN’. Via this VPN, your employee can access information on your server and perform tasks using central resources such as database applications or accounting packages.
As well as desktop computers and laptops, remote access is also possible from handheld devices such as PDAs.
